Cuando un escritor se dispone a contar una historia de terror debe tener muy presente la emoción que quiere transmitir al lector. Su eso o sus ellos deben dar miedo. Precisamente por eso, antes de ponerse a escribir, antes, incluso, de tener una historia que contar, debe hacerse unas cuantas preguntas.
¿Qué recursos literarios son los más adecuados? ¿Cómo debe tratarse aquello que provocará miedo en el relato? ¿Cuánta información puede dar al lector sobre eso? ¿Cómo conseguir que el lector crea en él?
Podría seguir planteando interrogantes de este tipo y no terminaría nunca. Por ello el escritor debe sintetizar. Debe formular una única pregunta cuya respuesta le ayude a resolverlas todas. Y esta pregunta es:
¿Cuál es la esencia del miedo?
Watson (1924) expuso una teoría explicativa del miedo que, aunque ha sido calificada de simplista posteriormente, será de gran ayuda para el escritor. Watson señala que los estímulos atemorizantes innatos, es decir, aquellos que no hemos aprendido, sino que simplemente desarrollan miedo, debido a su potencial carácter peligroso para el individuo, podrían ser:
- Los ruidos (generalmente fuertes).
- La pérdida de soporte inesperada.
- El dolor.
Sin embargo esta definición sólo se aplica a situaciones críticas donde la reacción es totalmente involuntaria. Aunque puede darnos algunas ideas necesitamos algo más. ¿Por qué? Porque la sensación que queremos transmitir depende en gran medida de la imaginación, no sólo del escritor, sino también del lector, por lo que necesitamos una definición más general.
El miedo es un mecanismo de defensa ante una amenaza real o potencial.
Esta es la respuesta que el escritor de terror necesita. Tan solo tiene que desarrollarla.
Teniendo esto presente procederemos a la creación de eso.
El foco del miedo.
En un relato de terror el origen del miedo puede ser racional o irracional, pero en todo caso debe cumplir al menos uno de estos requisitos:
1.-Debe ser desconocido.
El miedo se genera también ante un estímulo novedoso, ya que no se conocen sus intenciones. Se trataría de un peligro potencial.
Un claro ejemplo nos lo muestra Guy de Maupassant:
No obstante, a veces el animal se rebela y mata a quien lo domestica... yo también quiero... yo podría hacer lo mismo... pero primero hay que conocerlo, tocarlo y verlo. Los sabios afirman que los ojos de los animales no distinguen las mismas cosas que los nuestros. . . Y mis ojos no pueden distinguir al recién llegado que me oprime. ¿Por qué? ¡Oh! Recuerdo ahora las palabras del monje del monte Saint-Michel: "¿Acaso vemos la cienmilésima parte de lo que existe? Observe, por ejemplo, el viento que es la fuerza más poderosa de la naturaleza, el viento que derriba hombres y edificios, que arranca de cuajo los árboles, y levanta montañas de agua en el mar, que destruye los acantilados y arroja contra ellos a las grandes naves; el viento, que silba, gime y ruge. ¿Acaso lo ha visto usted alguna vez? ¿Acaso puede verlo? ¡Y sin embargo existe!" 2.-Debe ser creíble.
Si el lector llega a la conclusión de que no existe, dejará de tenerle miedo. Por ello es indispensable introducir datos, ya sean reales o ficticios, que al menos siembren la duda.
Un claro ejemplo… Lovecraft, por supuesto:

3.-Debe hacer daño.
Ya sea físico o psicológico, pues el dolor es, junto con los ruidos fuertes y la pérdida de apoyo, uno de los principales estímulos del miedo. Eso debe hacer daño. Aunque puede limitarse a matar, una muerte indolora no producirá el mismo efecto que una dolorosa. Por ello, la mente de eso tiene que ser retorcida, cruel, sádica.
Clive Barker lo tiene muy claro:
La mano del padre aún aferraba la cara de Kaufman; le metió el dedo índice en la boca y se lo hundió en la garganta, agarrando con la uña la raíz de la lengua. La intromisión de dio nauseas, pero no le quedaba voluntad para repeler el ataque.
–Sirve –dijo la criatura –. En silencio.
Se dio cuenta demasiado tarde de la intención de los dedos.
Aprisionaron repentinamente su lengua y la voltearon en la raíz. Conmocionado, dejó caer la cuchilla. Intentó chillar, pero no emitió ningún sonido. Tenía sangre en la garganta, oyó cómo le rasgaba la carne y se contorsionó de dolor.
Luego salió la mano de su boca, y los dedos escarlatas, cubiertos de baba, tenían su lengua cogida entre el índice y el pulgar delante de su cara. (El tren de la carne de medianoche)
4.-Debe tener un motivo.
Muchos escritores podrían pensar que no es realmente necesario. Que un demente podría matar sin motivo y seguiría provocando miedo. Esto es falso, las motivaciones nos guían, rigen nuestra existencia. Si eso tiene un motivo el lector sabe que no se detendrá hasta conseguirlo.
Sin embargo, el escritor puede (si lo considera oportuno) ocultar dicha motivación al lector. Esta puede ser racional o irracional.
Edgar A. Poe nos demuestra que hasta un demente se guía por sus motivaciones:
Me es imposible decir cómo aquella idea me entró en la cabeza por primera vez; pero, una vez concebida, me acosó noche y día. Yo no perseguía ningún propósito. Ni tampoco estaba colérico. Quería mucho al viejo. Jamás me había hecho nada malo. Jamás me insultó. Su dinero no me interesaba. Me parece que fue su ojo. ¡Sí, eso fue! Tenía un ojo semejante al de un buitre... Un ojo celeste, y velado por una tela. Cada vez que lo clavaba en mí se me helaba la sangre. Y así, poco a poco, muy gradualmente, me fui decidiendo a matar al viejo y librarme de aquel ojo para siempre. (El corazón delator)
La importancia del climax.
Una vez tenemos a nuestro bicho sería una torpeza por nuestra parte soltárselo al lector de golpe. Hay que preparar su entrada en escena de modo que se consiga el efecto deseado. A esto lo llamamos climax.
Hay muchas formas para generarlo, yo os daré una, la que considero mejor, pero que no tiene por qué serlo.
Estudiando la psicología del miedo, Sue Breton (1995), nos ha dado, inconscientemente, las pautas a seguir:
1.-Preocupación (igual a la ansiedad, pero el organismo no ejerce ninguna influencia, sobre ello).
Al inicio del relato, tanto el protagonista como el lector, desconocen por completo la existencia de eso, por lo que no le temen. Empezarán a conocerlo de un modo indirecto: por sus actos. Sin embargo, tenderán a racionalizarlo a falta de más datos, por lo que lo único que les provocará será una ligera preocupación por los acontecimientos.
En esta parte del relato es aconsejable profundizar en la psicología del protagonista para conseguir que el lector se identifique con él. De este modo todo lo que le suceda en el futuro afectará, en mayor o menor medida, al lector.
2.-Ansiedad (reacción del organismo, a nivel cuerpo y mente, ante una amenaza, menos inmediata a la que la persona puede poner fin).
El protagonista (o protagonistas) comienza a descubrir aspectos alarmantes de los actos de eso. Surgen los primeros elementos que ayudarán a generar el climax. Hay cosas que el protagonista desconoce, y es consciente de su ignorancia, lo que aumenta la tensión, pero todavía cree que puede ponerle fin.
En esta parte del relato debemos convencer al lector de que lo que sucede es real. Para ello emplearemos todos los medios de que dispongamos. Si es preciso mentiremos.
3.-Estrés (reacción continuada del organismo, ante una amenaza que sigue sin resolverse).
A medida que transcurra la acción, el protagonista se da cuenta de que eso le sobrepasa. No sabe como eliminarlo y todavía desconoce su verdadera naturaleza, pero ya le teme. A estas alturas sabrá todo lo que pueda (y el escritor le permita) saber acerca de eso.
También le habrá visto, oído, olfateado o sentido pero en ningún caso de forma clara y directa.
En esta parte del relato el escritor debe decidir si da a conocer la motivación del bicho al lector o no. En caso afirmativo puede hacerlo de forma directa (el protagonista descubre el motivo) o indirecta (el lector deduce, o no, el motivo encajando las piezas que el escritor ha introducido a lo largo del relato).
Después de este punto no hay que avanzar necesariamente al punto siguiente. Muchos escritores de terror prefieren volver al punto anterior dando lo que se denominaría una pista falsa. Un nuevo dato que podría ayudar al protagonista pero que, en la práctica, no lo hace. De esta forma se inculcaría un atisbo de esperanza que ayudará a subir la tensión e involucrar todavía más al lector en la historia.
4.-Miedo (reacción de supervivencia del cuerpo ante una amenaza inmediata)
Y es en este punto cuando nuestro bicho hace su entrada triunfal. Esta parte suele estar ligada al desenlace del relato, aunque no necesariamente. El protagonista (y por ende, el lector) ya está aterrorizado. Sabe lo mismo que en el punto anterior, pero esta vez está cara a cara frente a eso. Las dudas, la ignorancia en cuanto a la naturaleza del bicho y la incertidumbre sobre las posibilidades de supervivencia son el caldo de cultivo del miedo.
Cómo termine la historia queda a discreción del escritor.

Como es obvio, he tratado a eso de forma muy general, dando consejos sobre como tratarlo que son comunes y por tanto poco concretos.
Es el escritor el que, en función de eso, debe elegir como transcurrirá la trama, y de que forma intentará asustar al lector. Sin embargo creo que es importante dar un último consejo al escritor. El terror surge de la mente del lector cuando, consciente de los elementos que le presenta el escritor, imagina lo que hay más allá. Ser demasiado descriptivo puede no dar el resultado deseado.
Por otra parte soy un gran defensor del terror sugerido, pero también consciente de que un trozo de carne sanguinolenta en el momento adecuado puede ser realmente terrorífico.

Si quieres ser escritor, lo primero es hacer dos cosas: leer mucho y escribir mucho… Si no tienes tiempo de leer es que tampoco tienes tiempo ni herramientas para escribir. Así de sencillo.

El tema es muy interesante, y tú al menos te has atrevido a darle forma a los pasos, aunque las sentencias sean demasiado tajantes y muy poco contrastadas. Yo tengo una chuletilla que hice para este libro, pero tampoco me atrevería a formular un recetario. Creo que más bien optaría por "retocar", "completar" tu texto allí en donde creo que has pecado de Wikipedia.
Pero es una propuesta que tendré en cuenta, a ver si aporto algo al blog de Nocte.

Es un excelente artículo, pero como siempre hay que hacerle salvedades. Yo soy un recién licenciado en Psicología, y no me resultan ajenas las teorías de Watson, pero hay que entender que este hombre fue un pionero; pero, bueno, ha llovido mucho, tendríamos, para hablar de conductismo, que haber mencionado a otros autores que ejercieron ulteriormente mayor influencia, como Skinner. En cualquier caso, este artículo presenta una versión simplificada, sesgada, de la complejidad del miedo como emoción, aunque apunta hacia varias líneas muy interesantes.
No estoy de acuerdo con muchas de las aseveraciones, en realidad, casi ninguno de los "debes" que ha puesto el autor del texto son correctos. Resulta muy atrevido lanzar afirmaciones tan rotundas para un campo en continua revisión como es la Psicología.
Actualmente, estoy trabajando en esta misma línea con un libro que pretende ahondar en el terror del lector. Para ello estoy utilizando varios manuales de Psicología (sugestiones, emoción y motivación...). Sí podríamos afirmar que el miedo (y el terror: representación en grado extremo de dicha emoción) presenta tres reacciones: psicológica, fisiológica y conductual. El estímulo que provoca miedo puede ser natural o adquirido por aprendizaje, y provoca una amenaza o una pérdida de seguridad. En estos conceptos queda incluída cualquier referencia a lo desconocido, de ahí que las afirmaciones del texto no queden en otra cosa que en meros consejos o líneas útiles para asustar.
Podría extenderme más, pero eso para otro rato, ya me he pasado demasiado de listillo, je.

De hecho, tal y como dije en el artículo, el foco del miedo debería cumplir al menos uno de los cuatro requisitos expuestos, no todos.
Personalmente creo que proboca más miedo el peligro potencial que el real. Ya que este último es cuantificable y el otro no.
¿Que hay unos perros rabiosos en el sendero? Vale, acojona, pero son perros y actuarán como perros.
Ahora bien, si nadie los ha visto sino que han escuchado sus jadeos y han encontrado a sus víctimas despedazadas en el sendero, entonces atravesarlo acojona un poco más, ¿no crees?, porque el origen o el foco del miedo es desconocido y podría ser cualquier cosa, real o fantástica.
Ahora bién, esto no es incompatible con saber que la amenaza está ahí. Sino con desconocer el origen de la amenaza.
Me ha sorprendido lo de que "la causa del miedo debe ser desconocida". No entiendo el porqué.
Si tenemos que atravesar una zona en la que sabemos que hay perros salvajes que nos pueden atacar (pero nos vemos obligados a hacerlo) conocemos el origen del miedo.
Yo creo que saber que la amenaza está ahí puede producir todavía más terror, porque no se trata de un peligro que desconocemos y nos sorprende, sino que tenemos que enfrentarnos a nuestro propio miedo y vencerlo. Con dos cojones.

Hablando del motivo, no creo que sea tan importante que el asesino o el monstruo tengan un motivo coherente para su comportamiento, como que los sucesos sean significativos para la víctima. Porque todos sabemos que, al final, siempre existe un pecado original en el pasado de la víctima que justifica metafórica y católicamente su destino aciago.
Por cierto, me ha encantado lo de "la pérdida de soporte inesperada". De eso se trata exactamente, de quitar el suelo racional de debajo de los pies del lector durante un rato.
